How to Explain the Hobby of Baseball Cards to Anyone!

Mascot 101: Baseball-Card-Collecting-Turkey!

Hi Friends,

It's hard to imagine, because I still remember vividly as the calendar flipped from 2017 into 2018, but Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season are already upon us!

This time of year makes us think of Turkey, Shopping, Family, and Fun. Yet, some of us feel the stress when we think of sitting at the Thanksgiving Dinner table with folks that we might have not seen in a year, with whom we are forced to make small talk. By "some", I mean "most" of us have been in this position at some point in time. Stress!

The question is: what do you talk about with them? To quote an episode of a Charlie Brown cartoon I remember from childhood, always avoid discussing, "Religion, Politics, & the Great Pumpkin", as Linus so aptly stated.

May I make a suggestion? Discuss Baseball Cards. Point the conversation as if describing the hobby to newbies...basically, rookies...to the hobby. Since this is a stressful time of year for many, put a little twist on it!

What should you discuss about Baseball Cards? I figured you might ask that! I wrote the following script for you, from which you can use bits and pieces of in your conversation with Uncle Bart, Aunt Betty, Cousin Louis, your neighbor, Henry, 3rd cousin removed, Tina...you get the point!

What to Say?

Collecting Baseball Cards help relieve stress for many people who love sports, which is why Baseball Cards have been an irreplaceable part of American culture for over a century. These cardboard treasures give collectors a chance to see the stats and pictures of their favorite players, and are fun and not limited to any age or gender of collector.

Baseball Cards have come a long way in the past decade. As some collectors grew weary of the traditional card format, card companies needed to find a niche that would help boost the excitement of their product, so they pioneered numerous advancements in the trading card field. These companies, such as Topps, Bowman, Upper Deck, Panini, and Donruss, among others, have created numerous specialized and highly sought-after types of cards.

For instance, Topps, one of the industry's top companies and producers of Baseball Cards for about 70 years, has found a host of ways to keep collectors interested. In their latest set of cards, they have offered up the opportunity to get cards that are signed by the players that they represent, giving the card collectors an exciting sense of thrills every time that they open a new pack (with the possibility of getting an autographed card!).

Additionally, giving collectors a sense of owning a piece of history, they have begun to place actual pieces of game memorabilia within the cards. So, basically, you may end up opening a pack and getting a piece of fabric directly from the jersey of one of your favorite players, or even a chip of their bat.

These game-used memorabilia cards (referred to as "GU") don't necessarily have to come from players that played the year the cards were printed - if you get lucky, you may find yourself with a piece of a bat used by Joe DiMaggio! That can add a very interesting prospect to sports card collecting. These specialized memorabilia cards feature extremely limited print runs, allowing for a high value to be assessed for the more unique cards, and some of these more unique cards for the best players may fetch upwards of hundreds of dollars, so it's almost like buying a lottery ticket! Sure, some of the cards may cost more by-the-pack, but it is clearly worth it to have such an exciting chance to get close to your sports idols. With all of these opportunities for hungry collectors, Baseball Cards are in more demand than ever before.

Aside from the potential for huge profits from collecting Baseball Cards, collecting Baseball Cards and focusing on them in making sets or sub-sets can help relieve stress & anxiety by acting as a pleasant distraction to everyday stress. This calming effect helps fight everyday tensions, especially during the holiday season!

The 3 Game-Used Cards I'll Never Sell Anywhere, Even on CardboardandCoins.com

Hi Folks,
   Welcome back.

After being surrounded by sports memorabilia for more than a quarter of a century at that time (a few years back), it struck me....."GAME USED" CARDS....this stuff has certifiably been used in real MLB baseball games! The bug for baseball cards was strong, but once the bug for authentic/vintage/original memorabilia and collectibles hit me, I began to stock up...it's how I buy! Well, with the cat out of the bag, here are my Top 3 Favorite Game-Used Cards that I'll never sell anywhere, even on CardboardandCoins.com

#1: 2004 Topps Series Stitches Relics #SSR-HK Harmon Killebrew Minnesota Twins Card

killebrew, hof, game used, GU, Bat, world series, twins, topps

Sometimes, it all comes down to sentimental value. This is the card that drew me in to the Game-Used, or "GU" market. I've always collected Harmon Killebrew cards, so when I saw a piece of his actual bat on a card, I was mesmerized. Not wanting to buy simulated relics, I flipped over the card and saw the guarantee by Topps that this was truly game used by Killebrew. The price was reasonable, and earned a place in my permanent collection. My fire was lit and now I couldn't be stopped from buying up more GU cards!

#2: 2008 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Swatch Tony Gwynn Jersey Card #SS-TG

Gwynn, hof, game used, GU, Jersey, padres, upper deck

What more can I say but this; I am in awe of what Tony Gwynn accomplished. Each time I look at his stats I am left scratching my head. How does someone strikeout only about 20 times during an entire season. He must have seen a beach-ball instead of a tiny baseball. He was to hitting as Greg Maddux was to pitching; a clairvoyant scholar of the game with superior intelligence. I'm honored to have his Jersey card and wish he never touched chewing tobacco, which sadly ended his life way too early.

I picked up this card in Cooperstown when visiting the Hall of Fame with my son last year. What could be a more fitting purchase in "Baseball City" than a GU Tony Gwynn Jersey card?

#3: 2015 Mike Trout Topps Update ALL STAR GAME STITCHES WORKOUT JERSEY LA Angels

Trout, game used, GU, Jersey, angels, all-star game, mvp, topps

Mike Trout has already been dubbed, "the best player the game of baseball has ever seen", and is on track to surpass Mickey Mantles lifetime figures in all of the major power offense categories. Add in his over-the-top fielding ability and the kid-like role-model way he carries himself, and they just might have nailed the description of Trout's place in Baseball history.

When a player like this emerges, it's time to stockpile, and every true stockpile should have a GU item (or many GU items). I won this particular card at an auction, and by auction, I don't mean eBay. I mean a real Auction with a hammer, gavel, and a super-sonic speaking barker running the auction. For those of you out of the New York Metro area.....if you think we speak fast, then check out one of these real auctions. If you can understand them after while (it took me time...there is a learning curve), then us fast talking New Yorkers will be a piece of cake for you!

Next on my list? Even though I am a die-hard Mets fan, I definitely will be adding some GU Aaron Judge items to my collection. I'm also interested in GU Ty Cobb items, so that fun shopping plan will come into action in the next month or so. What an awesome hobby we have, folks!

What are some of your favorite GU cards? We'd love to hear!
